Using Your New Walk-In Cooler Or Freezer For The First Time

The importance of keeping your walk-in cooler or freezer running efficiently and safely cannot be overstated. Your walk-in cooler should be running at temperatures ranging from +34 degrees Fahrenheit to +37 degrees Fahrenheit unless you require a different temperature for special applications.
For your freezer unit, the temperatures should range from 0 degrees Fahrenheit to -10 degrees Fahrenheit for any frozen food. Then for ice cream, freezer temperatures should range between -10 degrees Fahrenheit to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
Before you can store any food products, there are a few key steps you must take to ensure the successful operation of your unit.

Start-Up Operations for a Walk-in Cooler

When you first start up your walk-in cooler, you can expect the following operating sequence to occur:
  • The thermostat will call for the refrigerant.
  • The liquid line solenoid valve opens, allowing the refrigerant to flow.
  • The pressure control then makes the control circuit and the condensing unit operate.
  • Once the room thermostat is satisfied, it will cause the liquid line solenoid to close.
  • Then, the compressor will pump down and shut off while the unit cooler fan will continue running.
It’s important to avoid setting your walk-in cooler lower than 32 degrees Fahrenheit because damage may occur.

Start-Up Operations for a Walk-In Freezer

When you are going to start your walk-in freezer, you can expect the following operating sequence:
  • The thermostat will call for the refrigerant.
  • The liquid line solenoid valve then opens and allows the refrigerant to flow.
  • The pressure control will cause the control circuit and then condensing unit to operate.
  • The fans will be delayed due to the defrost termination and will operate once the coil temperature reaches +20 degrees Fahrenheit. They can cycle two to three times until room temperature stabilizes.
  • Once the room thermostat is satisfied, it will cause the liquid line solenoid to close.
  • The compressor will then pump down and turn off.
If a qualified professional refrigerant technician installed your walk-in cooler or freezer, all of these operations should cycle without a problem.  By taking note of these operations, you can successfully start your walk-in cooler or freezer for the first time and make sure it operates correctly. With a little bit of preparation, you can ensure your food products are kept safe and in optimal condition for years to come!
